Job Summary

A project of Young America’s Foundation, the National Journalism Center (NJC) is an educational organization that trains aspiring journalists in the values of responsible, balanced, and accurate reporting. The NJC manages two 12-week semesters per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Students are recruited from around the country for each semester, and subsequently placed in newsrooms around the Washington, D.C., metro area.

NJC is looking for a full-time program officer to support the director and the program director in outreach to media, alumni, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor legacy media for bias and communicate with reporters and editors across media to correct biased coverage consistent with NJC’s guidelines.
  • Work with experts to craft and manage best practice guidelines on various topics for journalists.
  • Organize regular seminars and events for alumni and broader media allies.
  • Track and report on student and alumni professional successes.
  • Report on NJC programs as necessary for YAF and NJC publications and donors.
  • Assist the director and program director with weekly NJC classroom and off-site sessions
  • Assist the director and program director with NJC intern application review and organization and schedule interviews as necessary

Specific physical demands that relate directly to the essential job duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Frequently moves boxes and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for various office and special events needs
  • The ability to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc., and occasionally to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces

Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Effective communicator, both verbally and written.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a variety of personality types.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
