Young America’s Foundation has put Ely High School in Minnesota on notice for trampling on the constitutional rights of its students, who had hoped to commemorate the lives lost on 9/11 through the 9/11: Never Forget Project.
In a letter sent to Ely High School administrators, YAF demanded a public apology from the school for denying students the right to host the 9/11: Never Forget Project––and threatened litigation if the school did not create updated guidelines for student events in line with the U.S. Constitution.
“Unless EMHS takes the corrective actions discussed below, YAF is prepared to commence litigation against the district and any district employee who has deprived YAF and its students of their constitutional rights,” the letter read.
“School officials are not free to simply suppress expressions they do not agree with to avoid discomfort or controversy resulting from that expression, particularly when those views are protected political speech like what YAF and the students were planning,” YAF continued.
As YAF reported earlier, the EMHS Student Council was previously approved by the school to host the project. Then, after a community member complained about YAF’s involvement, the school quickly demanded the students remove all affiliation with the organization, before cancelling the display because YAF was a “political organization.”
YAF will not sit by and watch as tyrannical administrators continue to trample on students’ rights to assemble and promote pro-American ideals. This blatant viewpoint discrimination will not stand–and YAF is eager to remedy the situation by all means necessary.
