The George Washington University Board of Trustees announced in a press release Wednesday morning that the school will retire its “Colonials” nickname and mascot by the 2023-24 school year.
The university’s century-old mascot and moniker, inspired by George Washington, came under increased scrutiny by the student body during the 2018 school year. Students circulated a petition that amassed more than two-hundred signatures, according to the student newspaper.
The Board of Trustees subsequently established a task force to investigate the matter in November, 2019, which ultimately ruled in favor of abandoning the “offensive” name.
“We have evolved over our 200 years as an institution and a community,” Christopher Bracey, the university’s provost, told WTOP News.
Young America’s Foundation has covered this situation extensively over the past two years, ever since the university released a letter stating their intent to reconsider the mascot and moniker.
GW had already begun phasing out references to the “Colonials” back in 2019.
“I am disgusted with my alma mater,” YAF Spokeswoman Kara Zupkus noted. “It is no surprise that they once again bent the knee to the woke mob, as YAF predicted for decades. George Washington would be rolling in his grave.”
The university has yet to determine what their new mascot will be.
Universities need to stop catering to every little demand of their woke student bodies, and respect the history of our nation and the tradition of their own institutions.
