When Texas law enforcement dug up an old, unused statute to prosecute citizen journalist Priscilla Villarreal, YAF joined an amicus brief to petition the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the journalist’s Free Speech rights. Ms. Villarreal reported on local issues, such as crime and traffic incidents. When Ms. Villarreal’s reporting resulted in unflattering publicity for people in authority, police officers and the county’s district attorney attempted to intimidate her into silence. When that failed, authorities arrested Ms. Villarreal.
