Former Florida Congressman and retired Army Lt. Col. Allen West was blocked from speaking at Embry Riddle University Daytona’s campus after students with the university’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter sought to host him for an event promoting conservative values.
Despite the chapter’s efforts to follow university procedures, administrators restricted the event without providing students with a clear explanation. The university cited West’s public record as a reason for its decision, stating its commitment to “prioritizing of fostering an educational environment that supports inclusive dialogue, respectful discourse, and student safety.”
The decision raises serious concerns about whether Embry-Riddle is applying its standards for free expression equally or using them to prevent conservative students from bringing speakers to campus who challenge the institution’s preferred viewpoints.
“Embry Riddle University is targeting conservative students and denying them the same free-speech rights afforded to everyone else by blocking their effort to host Army Veteran and former Florida Congressman, Allen West,” said YAF President Gov. Scott Walker.
“Students should not need administrators’ approval to express conservative beliefs or hear from a speaker who represents their views. Silencing conservative students is not inclusion. it is yet another example of discrimination conservative students faces on campus.”
The incident highlights growing concerns about the treatment of conservative student organizations on college campuses, where students should have the freedom to invite speakers, engage in debate and express their beliefs without facing unequal restrictions. When university administrators block students from hosting a speaker while offering no clear explanation for the decision, they undermine the principles of open inquiry and free expression that higher education should uphold.
“I am absolutely appalled at the actions taken by the Embry-Riddle Administration in restricting Lt. Col. West’s speaking event on our campus,” said YAF Chapter President, Matthew Finckle.
“It is a shame to see freedom of speech and respectful exchanges of ideas restricted in such a biased and blatant way here in the United States. It is disappointing that our chapter has made a clear effort to follow the due process and still be restricted in our activities with no direct reason or explanation given”
Conservative students have a right to portray their values just as any other student has a right to speak out on campus.
