California Moves Closer to Mandating Taxpayer-Funded “Abortion Pills” at Public Universities

California Moves Closer to Mandating Taxpayer-Funded “Abortion Pills” at Public Universities

A piece of radical legislation making its way through California’s state government will mandate that public universities provide “abortion pills” to their students free of charge. Senate Bill 24, proposed by Senator Connie Leyva of Chino, would require all public universities in California to provide taxpayer-funded “nonsurgical abortions.” Each university’s health center would receive $200,000 in state funding to provide abortion-related services. These types of pills are generally effective in ending unborn lives up to nearly ten weeks after conception. In a statement last June, Leyva remarked: “SB 24 reaffirms the constitutional right of every college student to access abortion care. College students that wish to end their pregnancy should have the right to access that service on campus without delay.” It is unfortunate that Senator Leyva chooses to hide behind misnomers and leftist talking points. The notion that abortion is a constitutional right has been debunked by conservative and liberal judicial experts alike. Furthermore, her refusal to state what these pills actually do, which is end a growing and developing human life, is reprehensible. Instead Leyva tries to hide behind terms like “ending pregnancy” in order to make this reprehensible practice seem like a common medical surgery. SB 24 is currently in the California State Assembly for a vote. If passed, the bill will go to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk, where he has promised to sign it into law. For context on just how radical this proposal is, even Former Governor Jerry Brown, who was known for his leftist policies, refused to sign a similar bill during his time as governor. Governor Brown believed that such a bill was unnecessary. He cited a study in the Journal of Adolescent Health which found that abortion clinics were on average only six miles away from California campuses. The fact that Brown’s viewpoint is now considered moderate is indicative of the shifting views in the Golden State. If this bill becomes law, ending unborn lives will be made easier and more available to college students. It seems that the Left no longer wants abortion to be “safe, legal, and rare” but rather easily accessed, encouraged, and even celebrated.
