More than 200 students and community members gathered at the University of Georgia for a debate hosted by the university’s Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter, where Dr. Daniel Di Martino and local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) official Tim Denson faced off over socialism versus capitalism.
Di Martino made the case for capitalism by pointing to the repeated failures of socialism around the world, citing Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba as examples of the economic devastation that socialist policies can bring.
Drawing on his own experience growing up in Venezuela, he explained how socialist leaders were democratically elected before their policies helped turn what was once one of the wealthiest nations in the world into a country plagued by economic collapse and mass emigration.
When confronted with the consequences of socialism, Denson defended the DSA’s platform and failed to denounce some of its core positions, including abolishing the U.S. Senate.
Despite the opportunity for an open exchange of ideas, the debate drew criticism from the local DSA Steering Committee in Athens, which condemned the event and labeled YAF a hate group that promotes bigotry.
YAF hosted the debate to give students and community members the opportunity to hear competing perspectives and challenge the arguments behind both economic systems. Rather than shielding students from opposing viewpoints, the event encouraged attendees to engage directly with the issues and draw their own conclusions.
Following the opening remarks and questions from the moderator, attendees had the opportunity to question both speakers directly, giving students and community members a chance to press the debaters on their positions and participate in the discussion.
