When I tried to bring Robert Spencer to the University of California, Los Angeles, they blocked our event from happening—can you believe it?
I started a Young Americans for Freedom chapter at UCLA because I’m tired of the suffocating atmosphere against conservative voices. UCLA, right in the middle of a liberal city, rarely hears from people like us. YAF gave me this amazing chance to change that, and I took full advantage of that opportunity!
From the get-go, we’ve been spreading conservative ideas and creating a community of like-minded students ready for real dialogue. Even those who aren’t conservative, but feel out of place in the current campus climate, have found a home with us. This has been huge for our growth and impact.
But it’s not been smooth sailing. We invited Robert Spencer from Jihad Watch to speak about the Israel-Hamas conflict, and UCLA blocked us, shutting down our event despite our plans for a Q&A to foster understanding. They sided with pro-Hamas sympathizers. We just had our event canceled, but we are not worried or scared—we are ready to take action. One of the best parts about YAF is that we don’t just promote conservative values; we also get to stand up and fight when our voices are stifled. We’re now working with the Mountain States Legal Foundation and filing a lawsuit to preserve our First Amendment rights and hold the school accountable. It’s an exciting opportunity to make a real impact and show that we won’t back down.
