More than 100 students gathered around a Palestinian flag affixed to the clocktower at the central plaza of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Tuesday evening in order to “honor the martyrs of Palestine” who have launched an unprecedented attack on the people of Israel throughout the past week.
The outdoor event, at which masks were mandated, lasted nearly an hour.
“We should all be doing our part to keep each other safe,” a Students for Justice in Palestine event organizer said over a megaphone. “Please have some kind of mask or face covering on your face,” he told participants.
In an Instagram post promoting the event, the SJP organization said that the “martyrs” “light the fire of resistance and guide [them] on the path towards liberation and return.”
“Free, free, Palestine,” students chanted at the end of the rally.
The New Guard attempted to ask students why they’re supporting an entity that is responsible for the brutal murders of more than 1,200 since Saturday. Event organizers told participants not to answer any questions.
Young America’s Foundation is currently working to organize a national initiative in support of Israel in partnership with YAF chapters and other student groups throughout the country.
