A Seattle Children’s Hospital plastic surgeon and assistant professor at the University of Washington who performs breast removal surgeries on young girls claims to be a practitioner of “surgical justice.”
Dr. Shane Morrison, who has worked at the hospital for two years, offers an array of procedures that are supposedly designed to “affirm” an individual’s transition to the opposite sex or “non-binary” identity.
“Gender-affirming surgery allows us to really address surgical justice for most of the patients that we see,” Morrison said during an interview published by the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics.
The doctor’s website describes “surgical justice” as “the use of medicine to enact social justice.”
When asked by the interviewer what led him down his career path, Morrison shared that he was inspired by a “transgender” professor while in college at the University of Michigan:
“One of my professors was speaking about his [sic] transition from being a woman to a man and how that had a profound impact on his [sic] ability to become part of the scientific community.”
He also said that he hopes to continue merging his passion for activism with his passion for surgery while inspiring others to do the same.
It’s unclear how “justice” is accomplished by removing the healthy breasts of a 15-year-old girl. Of course, no child is ever prepared to make a decision of such nature.
Unfortunately, Morrison’s clinic at the children’s hospital is doing everything it can to make the harmful and irreversible procedure as accessible as possible. The clinic’s website offers a 2-page fill-in-the-blank letter that can be used to recommend breast removal with only a few strokes of a pen.
Morrison also co-authored an article that outlines opportunities for his industry to leverage the powers of artificial intelligence to “counsel” patients and encourage them to choose “gender-affirming care.”
The New Guard attempted to reach Boston Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington, and Dr. Morrison to ask how these surgeries accomplish “justice.” Boston Children’s Hospital declined; UW and Morrison have yet to respond. This article will be updated accordingly.
