Decolonize UW, a Leftist group at the University of Washington-Seattle, is tired of their university encroaching on land previously inhabited by Native Americans and only sees one solution to this problem: decolonization. Despite there being nine reservations in the Puget Sound area where the university is located, Decolonize UW is calling upon the university to grant independence to the University of Washington’s Seattle campus. The group’s Facebook page explains, “We don’t want diversity. We don’t want race and equity initiative. We demand decolonization by any means necessary!” Their reason for supporting decolonization is because of the foundation on which the University of Washington-Seattle was built. The majority of the Puget Sound area where the university is located was once occupied by several Native American tribes. “The University of Washington is at its core an institution committed to the perpetuating white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalism,” the group claims. Decolonize UW is also convinced that the university profits off of the oppression of people of color through a “school to prison” pipeline, and makes the wild accusation that the university’s endowment has tens of millions of dollars invested in this program. Norm Arkans, the university’s spokesman, struck down Decolonize UW’s claims about the university investing in private prisons, telling The New Guard, “None of our funds are currently invested in or have been invested in [private prisons].” Mr. Arkans confirmed that the institution does not stand by Decolonize UW’s mission of decolonizing and does not believe that the University of Washington-Seattle is committed to white supremacy, but is committed to being a diverse academic institution. Decolonize UW has proven once again that the Left’s ideology is predominately based off of false accusations rather than facts. If these students were truly passionate about decolonization, maybe they shouldn’t pay thirty thousands dollars a year in tution to an institution that’s supposedly so oppressive.
