After Kim Kardashian West (somewhat bravely) refused to label herself as a feminist during a panel discussion at a recent conference for bloggers, Buzzfeed published a hilariously distressed reaction to her comments. The writer began by declaring, “It’s never not jarring to hear a female celebrity say she’s not a feminist — particularly when, in her disavowal of the word, she rattles off a list of things she does believe in that are usually the actual definition of feminism.” Here’s what Kardashian West said that so upset this particular writer: “Everyone always says, are you a feminist? And I don’t think that I am. I don’t like labels.” She continued on to say, “I do what makes me happy and I want women to be confident and I’m so supportive of women.” The writer reacted by noting, “Besides feeling disappointed when she said this, I also felt sad.” I feel sad about ISIS committing unspeakable acts of violence against women, not about comments celebrities make at blogging conferences. To her credit, Kim Kardashian is certainly aware of the risks associated with refusing to embrace the feminist label and chose to reject it anyway. If feminists so desperately crave approval from reality television stars, they need reevaluate their movement and their lives.
