A professor at Michigan Technological University opened a recent class lectures with a rant about the Young Americans for Freedom chapter’s recent Freedom Week activism project, calling the conservative students – some of whom are his own students – “childish, stupid, homophobic, dumb, racist twits.”
In celebration of the 34th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the chapter participated in one of YAF’s long standing traditions – constructing a mock Berlin Wall, decorating it graffiti-style with terms that represent the Left’s mechanisms of squelching free speech, and, of course, destroying it at the end of the day.
Despite this activism project’s direct tie to a landmark global issue, Dr. Carl Blair, principal lecturer for global issues, was not happy about it, to say the least.
The intolerant professor, who apparently takes issue with celebrating the freeing of millions of people from an oppressive regime, opened class with the following monologue:
“For those of you who weren’t aware of it [YAF’s Freedom Week activism project], good. For those of you who were aware of it, it was childish, stupid, homophobic, dumb, racist twits. That’s the polite version,” he said.
“It was wrong, it was tacky, it’s not illegal – what they did. Stupid, uncollegial, really bad taste, and it shows what a bunch of ying yangs they are. You know, it’s too bad you all have to deal with things like that. Wasted half my morning dealing with things like that. It’s annoying. That’s not what college should be about. You know, it should be a place where you could learn, experience, do interesting things, have interesting opportunities – hint, hint, study away – uh, rather than wasting your time and having to address idiots. They’re idiots out there. Sorry, that’s life.”
It’s unclear why Dr. Blair feels that the YAF chapter’s project was hateful, or how it possibly could have, as he alleged, advocated for violence.
Dr. Blair wasn’t the only person on campus who found YAF’s celebration of freedom revolting.
As the New Guard previously reported, the chapter’s display was surrounded by a group of protestors all day, and was ultimately torn down – ironically – by a leftist student.
When reached for comment by the New Guard, Dr. Blair said, “I stand by my words and I have nothing else to say to you,” before slamming the phone.
According to Michigan Tech YAF students, he is actively advocating for the forced dissolution of the YAF chapter by the administration.
Fortunately, the administration has given the chapter assurances that their constitutional right to assemble will not be infringed. Young America’s Foundation will ensure that this promise is upheld.
