SLU Investigates Allen West Flyer as ‘Bias Incident’ According to a screenshot obtained by Young America’s Foundation, Saint Louis University is investigating a “bias incident” regarding a poster used to promote a recent campus lecture with Lt. Col. Allen West, part of the Fred Allen Lecture Series. In the days leading up to the lecture, a student placed a promotional poster on a public bulletin board to advertise the event. This particular bulletin board also included a display featuring memorials for Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, and others. In response, the Black Student Alliance at SLU posted the following on their Facebook page, calling the flyer “intentional disrespect.”SLU BSA In the immediate aftermath of this overblown “controversy,” someone on SLU’s campus filed a “bias incident report,” on the posting of the flyer (seen below; fifth report down). slu-screencap-2 According to the “Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity,” the investigation of the poster is ongoing (despite this particular poster being approved by the Student Involvement Department). According to Dylan McClosky, the student who organized the West lecture this fall, administrators informed him that they are investigating whether this action “constitutes harassment or bias.” The “protected classes” “affected” by this poster include “persons of color (race/color)” and “a particular religion (Muslims – followers of Islam.)” Instead of throwing out this ridiculous complaint in the first place, the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity is “investigating” it, granting legitimacy to the bizarre allegations. As an alumna of SLU, if I had paid this much attention to pieces of paper that “offended” me as a student, I probably would have never graduated. Furthermore, how is Lt. Col. Allen West, a decorated African American war hero, guilty of offending “people of color?” I’m struggling to find the logical consistency here. SLU students, grow up. Racism does exist in our society, but ridiculous claims of “bias incidents” simply dilute the true cases of racism we should all unite against.
