Young Americans for Freedom chapters across the country commemorated the 59th anniversary of the death of Che Guevara, a leading figure in the Cuban communist revolution and a symbol of Marxist revolutionary movements throughout the Western Hemisphere.
Executed on October 9, 1967, Guevara has since been romanticized on college campuses and celebrated in popular culture, often at the expense of the brutal reality of the ideology he championed. YAF chapters are challenging that glorification by reminding students of the consequences of communism and Marxism.
Communist regimes have been responsible for the deaths of more than 100 million people worldwide through mass starvation, political purges, forced labor and executions. From the Soviet Union to Maoist China and Castro’s Cuba, history has demonstrated the devastating consequences of communist ideology and the authoritarian regimes built upon it.
Yet, socialist and Marxist ideas continue to gain traction among young Americans. Students must understand the historical realities of these movements rather than accept a sanitized version of their leaders and beliefs.
The anniversary of Guevara’s death serves as a reminder that freedom cannot exist under systems that suppress individual liberty, silence dissent and place the state above the individual.
Students across the country must reject communism and Marxism and the cult of collectivism in every shape and form. We must never allow the crimes of these ideologies to be forgotten, excused or celebrated. It is our responsibility to defend individual liberty, expose the failures of socialism and communism, and ensure the next generation understands the true cost of sacrificing freedom for the promises of collectivism.
