This week marks two important dates in the history of free market economics.
Forty-four years ago, on August 13, 1981, President Ronald Reagan signed the landmark Economic Recovery Tax Act at his beloved Rancho del Cielo, now owned and operated by Young America’s Foundation to educate college, high school, and middle school students with Reagan’s principles. Launching the largest tax cut in U.S. history, this legislation helped lift millions of Americans out of the economic disaster of the 1970s and sparked the prosperity of the 1980s.
The ideas behind this historic legislation were shaped by economist Dr. Arthur Laffer, whose birthday fittingly falls on August 14. Happy 85th birthday to Dr. Laffer!
YAF celebrates Dr. Laffer not only for his groundbreaking economic insights, but also for his unwavering friendship with YAF to educate the next generation with these ideas.
Throughout his career, Dr. Laffer has spoken to thousands of YAF students at nearly than 50 college campuses and YAF conferences, informing and inspiring them with his clarity and infectious enthusiasm. At each YAF program, Dr. Laffer teaches young people the five pillars of economic prosperity: 1) sound money, 2) free trade, 3) minimal regulations, 4) limited government spending, and 5) low, broad-based taxes.
In recognition of his lifelong work to advance the economic prosperity of millions of Americans, President Donald Trump rightfully awarded Dr. Laffer the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
