Fans of Taylor Swift are emptying out their wallets to enroll in a new Taylor Swift course at Brigham Young University, according to a report on the campus’ news website.
The course will be taught this semester by Ryan Davis, a professor who attended three of the pop star’s “Eras Tour” concerts (tickets for which averaged $3,801).
The Swift-obsessed professor explained to the campus paper that he first fell in love with Swift’s music 17 years ago while pulling into a grocery store parking lot, and that her music has strengthened his relationship with his sister.
“Whatever this is, I’m here for it,” Davis recalled thinking, according to the BYU Universe.
While that’s nice and all, BYU charges up to $1,986 for the three-credit-hour course, and more than half of all college students nationally are taking out loans to pay their tuition.
Courses with dubious value like this certainly call into question the Biden Administration’s constant efforts to “forgive” (i.e. shift the burden onto American taxpayers) student loans. According to the Federal Reserve, student loan debt totaled more than $1.77 trillion as of November.
If students really want to pay this much money to take a Taylor Swift course, good for them, but they’d better not come begging for loan forgiveness later down the line.
Perhaps founding a “Swift Society” club, as student and faculty fans are doing on campuses nationwide, would be a better way for Davis to share his passion with students – at no cost to students or taxpayers.
