The University of Utah’s LGBT Resource Center and a socialist student organization are sponsoring a lecture on “queer resistance” led by a socialist militia called the “Armed Queers of Salt Lake City,” according to a tip submitted through Young America’s Foundation’s Campus Bias Tip Line.
The student organization co-hosting the event, “Mecha,” stands for 11 principles, including the “termination of oppressive systems” such as the free market and the “cis-heteropatriarchy,” and “the termination of land ownership,” among other very destructive ideas.
“The club puts a large focus on action in order to bring about genuine change, especially following the presence of the Young America’s Foundation on campus,” one of the club’s leaders said in a recent interview with the student paper, referring to Utah’s successful Young Americans for Freedom chapter.
During the upcoming lecture, the militant community Marxists will teach students about “the radical history of queer resistance and what we can learn from queer revolutionaries.”
Despite the Left’s usual resistance to guns, this group is heavily armed.
Utah law allows concealed weapon permit holders to be armed on university grounds. It is unclear whether the militia intends to bring firearms to campus.
Young America’s Foundation unequivocally supports the Second Amendment and the responsibility its privileges demand. In the case of the “Armed Queers,” however, the responsibility factor appears to be severely lacking.
The flyer used to promote the militia’s event, depicting an individual holding a firearm with her finger on the trigger, is in direct violation of one of the universal rules of gun safety: “Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.” This blatant disregard for a fundamental principle of firearm safety raises concerns about the group’s approach to responsible gun ownership.
Furthermore, it is concerning that the stated goal of the LGBTQ+ militia is to “agitate” individuals who disagree with the Left’s radical agenda.
Perhaps, these leftists should reconsider the ideology they claim to stand for. Under the destructive system of socialism they so desperately desire, they certainly would lose the right to own firearms.
Lucy Atwood, chairwoman of University of Utah’s Young Americans for Freedom, told the New Guard that she and her fellow YAFers will not be intimidated by the campus socialists or their local militia: “We won’t be intimidated by this group and we will continue to stand up for conservative values.”
The Armed Queers did not respond to the New Guard’s request for comment. Shawn Wood, the University of Utah’s communications manager, told the New Guard that his office is investigating the situation. This article will be updated accordingly.
