How the University of South Alabama tried to bully YAF and failed

The Young Americans for Freedom Chapter at the University of South Alabama has faced mounting resistance all semester.

In a hostile-to-conservatives campus environment, USA YAF members have been facing unequal treatment by the university and others on campus since January.

USA YAF drew attention to “Sex Toy Bingo” on campus and exposed a “Queer Animal Research Lab” to the public, which later shut down following USA YAF’s exposition.

Since then, the university has placed pressure on their chapter in various ways. Chapter leaders say that two faculty advisors have stepped down under university pressure, forcing the club to search for a new advisor under threat of removal from campus if the chapter can’t find one in time.

During the semester, anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protestors disrupted classes and violated school policies without repercussion while USA YAF had to fight for every event they’ve hosted. This inspired the YAF chapter to invite an active ICE agent to speak to students on campus.

Then, just a week before the event, the university threatened a cease-and-desist order if they didn’t move the already approved speaker event to a much larger and non-central venue across campus.

That same pro-ICE event was almost cancelled the agent was forced to withdraw from the event after planned protests were announced.  In response, the chapter quickly adapted, inviting Lt. Col. Allen West to campus instead.

Despite opposition arriving at the venue with what appeared to be A.I.-generated questions prepared for West, the chapter’s event drew a large audience of supporters and protestors alike. West expertly handled the protest organizers’ “tough questions.”

Chapter chairman Joshua Smith also reports that his chapter had been “ghosted” by the University administration while trying to inquire about some policy changes the chapter was proposing regarding the Second Amendment on campus, especially relevant after a gunman held a student hostage on campus this past semester.

“YAF at South Alabama is dedicated to exposing the corruption and double standards used against conservative students on campus.” Smith says.
