YAF Defeats Leftist Attempts to Derail Pro-Israel Event at UCLA

After a struggle with leftist administrators that escalated to the point that conservative students had to threaten a lawsuit against their university, Young Americans for Freedom chapter at the University of California, Los Angeles has received approval to host counter-jihad expert Robert Spencer for a pro-Israel event next week.

“From the outset, UCLA has engaged in unexplained and discriminatory delays in approving YAF’s application. Indeed, officials initially refused to provide any response whatsoever to numerous emails and other communications from YAF, and only agreed to have a meeting to discuss the application after YAF’s chapter president threatened to appeal to the Office of the Chancellor,” YAF legal partner Mountain States Legal Foundation wrote in a demand letter sent to the university.

UCLA YAF Chairman Matthew Weinberg made the initial request weeks ago, but his emails went unanswered, and he was eventually told that approval to host Spencer to speak on “Why Everything You Know About Palestine is Wrong” would be contingent on whether or not the pro-Hamas encampment will still be going on on the day of the event, May 15.

During the meeting, Police Sergeant Roland Ruiz warned, “I can say from the PD perspective, we can’t approve–we don’t know yet–how long the encampments will go on, and so we wouldn’t yet give our approval.”

A Young America’s Foundation team member responded by reminding administrators of the time their sister institution, the University of California, Berkeley, had to pay YAF $70,000 for using a similar tactic to derail a Ben Shapiro event.

“Yeah, we didn’t appreciate that,” remarked Pamela Lewis, director of the student union.

Thankfully, the administrators chose to stop their unlawful conduct, and Robert Spencer will take the stage of the Hamas-ridden campus as scheduled on the evening of May 15.

“We are gratified that UCLA leadership has reversed course in response to our letter,” said James Kerwin, Senior Counsel at MSLF. “The University was playing favorites: coddling leftwing anti-Israel activists while silencing voices with differing views. That was a violation of democratic norms and the Constitution. We are glad that UCLA has come to its senses on this matter.””
