Plans for an “LGBTQ+ Only Pool Party” hosted by the University of North Carolina – Wilmington’s Department of Campus Recreation were forced to be modified after Young America’s Foundation worked with a civil rights expert to file a complaint.
The event, which will take place this evening at the campus pool, would have shut down the entire facility and interrupted open-swim hours to all who do not identify as “transgender, non-binary, and queer.”
Thanks to a student who brought this event to YAF’s attention through the Campus Bias Tip Line, YAF’s legal team worked with Mark J. Perry, an emeritus professor and senior fellow with Do No Harm, to file a federal discrimination complaint.
“How does UNCW reconcile its stated commitment to equality of opportunity based on sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation with the “LGBTQ+ Only Pool Party” that will illegally and unethically exclude and discriminate against non-LGBTQ+ students based on their sexual orientation and gender identity?” Perry asked UNCW General Counsel John Scherer in an email.
Within hours of receiving a copy of the complaint, university officials modified the illegal restrictions.
In addition to opening the event to anyone who may want to (for whatever strange reason) join, those who would like to swim a few laps without celebrating leftist sexualities and “gender identities” will now be able to do so:
“We will have three lanes open for open-swim, and the other lanes will be reserved for the private event,” a campus recreation worker told the New Guard.
