A year-long legal battle involving the Oklahoma State University Young Americans for Freedom chapter has come to an end after a student pleaded guilty to malicious injury to property stemming from an incident at the chapter’s campus outreach table.
Oklahoma State University student Jacob Avery repeatedly approached the YAF table, taking and destroying materials belonging to the chapter. After returning several times Avery removed the remaining materials from the table and threw them into the air, disrupting the chapter’s outreach efforts and damaging its property.
The chapter reported the incident to law enforcement and filed charges. The case remained ongoing for a year before reaching its conclusion with Avery’s guilty plea.
The incident highlights the challenges conservative students can face while exercising their right to speak and advocate for their beliefs on college campuses.
Students should be able to participate in peaceful campus activities without having their property stolen or their outreach efforts disrupted because of the views they express.
Despite opposition, Young Americans for Freedom chapters across the country continue to engage their peers and promote the principles they believe in on their campuses.
Conservative students deserve the same opportunity as every other student to speak freely, engage with their peers and advocate for their beliefs on campus.
