A required freshman orientation course at Temple University lists capitalism as an example of “overarching ideologies that create and maintain marginalization,” according to a tip received through Young America’s Foundation’s Campus Bias Tip Line.
The public university’s Wellness Resource Center threatens to “place a hold” on the academic accounts of students who fail to pass the “Fostering Diversity & Inclusive Communities” course by the end of the first week of the semester.
In addition to capitalism, “white supremacy,” “racism,” “patriarchy,” “ableism,” and “heterocentrism” are also listed as examples.
Raj Kannappan, director of YAF’s Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, offered a compelling counterargument to the university’s flawed assertion: “Capitalism is, by definition, an economic system based on free and voluntary exchange, the opposite of oppression. Instead of welcoming new students by denigrating capitalism, Temple University—funded by hard-working American taxpayers—should expose them to the true oppression of communism and socialism, which have killed more than 100 million people around the world.”
“It makes little sense to me that a university funded and functioning through capitalism would claim capitalism to be a bad thing,” the incoming freshman who submitted the tip to the New Guard remarked.
The course also requires freshmen to work through training exercises on the use of “non-binary” pronouns and becoming leftist “change activists” on campus.
The Wellness Resource Center did not immediately respond to the New Guard’s request for comment. This article will be updated accordingly.
