When the Colorado College YAF Chapter decided to host economist and Venezuelan immigrant Daniel Di Martino to discuss immigration reform and border security, they applied for school funding to help make it happen. After following the procedures to the T, they were met with an unfortunate but unsurprising response. The finance committee denied the request, labeling the event “partisan” and “harmful to students.”
It became apparent that the YAF Chapter was more familiar with the rules than the student government was. When YAF leaders defended their request, pointing out the student government’s mistakes, they were met with emotional tirades in place of due process. Incredibly, Colorado College’s Vice President of DEI even stated that the student government would deny funding for any YAF event if just one student claimed, “emotional harm.”
YAF sent a legal demand to Colorado College, warning that such a standard violates the school’s obligation to uphold viewpoint neutrality in student funding decisions.
