Born into abject poverty in rural Southwest Virginia as one of twelve children and a junior high dropout, she rose through unwavering determination to earn five advanced degrees: a B.A. magna cum laude in criminal justice from Roanoke College (Phi Beta Kappa founding member), a Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a Master of Studies in Law from Yale. She achieved early tenure at Princeton University and full professorship at Vanderbilt, serving as Professor of Political Science and Professor of Law.
