After months of persistent restroom sign vandalism, California Polytechnic State University officials are giving in to leftists’ demands to designate 15 multi-stall male and female restrooms on campus as “all-gender” facilities.
“In the past six months, the restroom signs in the Dexter Building have repeatedly been vandalized. Facility Operations has repeatedly repaired the damage and installed new signs, which have also been taken down or damaged,” reads a notice written by Joy Pedersen, dean of students. “Based on these actions, we believe there is interest in having these facilities converted to gender inclusive restrooms.”
In addition to stealing and damaging signs, the Cal Poly student newspaper reports that students have taken it upon themselves to add “nonbinary” to signs that were left on the wall.
The dean held a town hall discussion in March to discuss the official redesignation of the restrooms and released a survey to the campus community in order to gather feedback. Despite at least 25 percent of respondents expressing privacy concerns, the university is going along with leftists’ demands.
Town hall participants also made clear that they were not okay with the university’s plan to indicate on new signage whether or not urinals are present in the “all-gender” facilities. One student told the campus paper that indicating the presence of urinals is “reinforcing cisgender bathrooms.”
The paper also reports that Associate Director of Capital Projects Michelle Chariton remarked that “restrooms are hostile” for “transgender” and “nonbinary” people and that the university will gradually increase the scope of the project in sets of 15 restrooms at a time.
It’s disappointing but not surprising that this university is deciding to place the demands of a handful of delusional students ahead of the comfort and safety of the general student body.
